Bristol
Theatre West, Bristol’s premier new writing company, is casting Pavement by Sharon Clark, the third play in their autumn season at the Alma Tavern Theatre, Bristol.
In a sprawling, dilapidated house on the north coast of Cornwall, Ruby tries to keep her head above water by picking cabbages and fixing cars, whilst Rash knows it is only a matter of time before his genius is recognised. Broke, bickering and beleaguered their lives are consumed by the constant shadow of the person who left them many years before…
Pavement is a fierce, funny and tender meditation on love, loss and broken engines.
Ruby (playing age 30 -35): lives with Rash in a sprawling, run down farmhouse in Cornwall where she runs a garage on the edge of extinction. Physically fit, practical and feisty; Ruby is battling with debt, loneliness and isolation. She works three jobs to keep the wolves from the door and support Rash’s writing.
Rash (playing age 30-35): writer and collator of facts with a head for numbers and miscellany. Mildly autistic, Rash lives with Ruby in the farmhouse in Cornwall. Spends his days writing with the aim of producing an international bestseller, making a million and having his genius recognised. He is bad at lying, emotional, volatile, vulnerable and addicted to Monster Munch.
Tom (playing age 35-40): ex-Oxbridge physicist, political activist and man of God who has spent the past three years famously protesting from the pavement outside the Houses of Parliament. Scruffy, thin, wiry but with a certain sexual charisma. Seemingly unprepossessing he has a hidden streak of hubris. His unexpected return to the family home is the catalyst of the play.
