Bath Fringe Festival loses its council funding

The future of Bath Fringe Festival has been thrown into doubt after it lost its council funding. Bath & North East Somerset Council has pulled out because it says the organisers have not met the conditions of their agreement. Nicole O'Flaherty, who chairs the festival, says the Fringe needs to find £15,000 from sponsors for this year's event. She said: "Our future could be threatened which is such a shame." Ms O'Flaherty added: "The people who run the Fringe do feel let down by the council because they thought they had provided the information the council needed. "The Fringe is a very good counter-balance with all the other festivals in Bath. It attracts people who are not quite so likely to go to the other festivals. "They're younger and maybe not happy to sit through an hour of Mozart. At the Fringe you can get up and walk around and get yourself a drink and you don't have to wear anything posh." "Although some progress had been made by October 2009, further concerns have arisen and the decision was taken to cease funding." It said the money would go to another community arts project. This year's event runs from Friday 28 May to Sunday 13 June. Source BBC News
