Arts Council England chief executive Alan Davey has warned any future government against cutting public funding for the arts, arguing that not only will it affect the cultural quality of life in the country but will also be economically damaging.
Speaking at the Culture is Right conference, held at London’s Unicorn Theatre, Davey claimed that “the arts ought to be a key part of any civilized government’s mission”. While acknowledging that whichever party finds itself in power after the next general election will be dealing with “public finances that will be under pressure”, he insisted that every £1 of public money invested in the arts levers a further £2 from elsewhere, as well as creating jobs and contributing to the fastest-growing sector of the UK economy.
